As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, we are mindful of all things Irish. In addition to St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, March is also designated to Irish American Heritage Month. The links between the two nations are deep-rooted and this campaign gives opportunity to recognize the very important contributions of the Irish to America.
One such contributor is Denis Hayes, an Irish American environmental activist. Denis was the principal national organizer of the first Earth Day in 1970, taking the event international in 1990. Earth Day, as we know, is an annual global event, “more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.”
As board chair of the international Earth Day Network, Denis is gearing up for the 50th Earth Day anniversary in 2020. We here at Earth’s Call salute Denis Hayes as an Irish American who has made a lasting impact on furthering environmental activism and tackling the climate crisis.
