The Academy Awards will take place tonight and we here at Earth’s Call are thinking green. Not the movie “Green Book,” which is up for Best Picture among other awards, and which covers an important and overlooked chapter of the African-American experience. But it isn’t a “green” movie in the traditional environmental sense.

We’ve combed through others’ best-of lists (thanks Grist, CBS, IMDB, and Eco Warrior Princess, among others) and made our own to offer this top 10 list of greatest green movies.

  • An Inconvenient Truth (environmental documentary, Al Gore)
  • March of the Penguins (documentary about penguins annual migration in Antarctica)
  • Gorillas in the Mist (biopic about wildlife scientist who lives among gorillas)
  • Erin Brockovich (biopic about environmental activist)
  • Waterworld (dystopian fiction about landless future)
  • A Civil Action (real-life legal drama over polluted water)
  • Wall-E (futuristic robots work to keep Earth’s last plant — and living thing — alive)
  • The Cove (documentary about dolphin hunts in Japan)
  • Food Inc.(documentary about industrialized food)
  • Winged Migration (documentary about birds in flight)
